Stevns Klint Unesco

Boesdalsvej 14, 4673 Rødvig Stevns, Denmark

This 15 km-long coastal cliff offers a rare and powerful glimpse into one of the most significant events in Earth’s history. Its fossil-rich layers preserve clear evidence of the Chicxulub meteorite impact that struck the planet around 65 million years ago, marking the end of the Cretaceous period. This catastrophic event is believed to have caused the most extensive mass extinction ever, eliminating more than half of all life on Earth, including the dinosaurs.

Within the cliff, researchers have identified traces of the global ash cloud created by the impact, even though the actual collision site lies deep beneath the ocean off Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. What makes this location truly exceptional is its continuous and well-preserved fossil record. It documents, in remarkable detail, the transition from life before the extinction to the gradual recovery that followed, revealing how ecosystems rebuilt and evolved over time.
